The Sink Monster
So the garbage disposal quits working after 19 years. I reset the little red button, manually turn the motor this way and that several times, motor makes a humming noise but will not turn on its own. I check it every day for a week or so while we are careful not to allow any foodstuff to get into the basket. Ordering a new one to be delivered will take 2 weeks.
I check it again before driving the 60 miles round trip to buy a new one, she does not work. I buy a new disposal, bring it home, and it sits for 10 days while I clear up the paperwork I have in progress. During this time, we turn the disposal switch on a couple times each day to see if it will magically begin to operate again. I do not accept any new work so I will have a clear weekend to do the installation. Today is installation day, tools are by my side, the trash can and a hundred other items are cleared from under the sink, time to crawl under and get this job done. I do not relish the thought of having to lay on my bad back over the edge of the sink cabinet. I flip the switch one more time and you know the rest of the story. The old 'Sink Monster' works like a charm.
I believe I'll hang onto the new one for a couple months before returning it, just to be sure. Or perhaps I'll keep it to have on hand for the day when the old one finally gives up for good. Or maybe having one on hand will keep the old one from quitting again.
